The Notebook By Nicholas Sparks

Today, I am gonna write about "The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks", one of my most favorite book of all the time. This writer, Nicholas Sparks legit writes love. All of his novels are full of magic, tenderness, boldness and filled with beauty of true, endless Love. I have read and admired all of his novels but 'The Notebook' stood out of them. Sparks has penned it quite keenly that anybody who ever read it couldn't free himself of its charm and fell head over heals for this masterpiece. The book was later adapted for movie and did great in the box office too.

According to Sparks,

"The Notebook was originally inspired by the story of my wife’s grandparents. They had a rare and beautiful relationship, one that withstood the test of time and circumstance. When I first met them, they had been married over sixty years, and I remember marveling at how much they still seemed to care for each other. The Notebook attempts to portray such a love. That said, The Notebook is a novel, not a memoir. Many changes were made regarding their story, in order to make the novel more universal, while staying committed to my original intent."

First a little about the plot, The Notebook is a modern romantic tale set in the pre-and post era of the World War II. The book began with Noah Calhoun, the male protagonist, an old man, reading the following story to an elderly woman, Allie, the female protagonist, suffering from Alzheimer in a nursing home,

Noah aged 31, returns to his town from World War II and finishes restoring an antebellum-style house. In the meantime, Allie, who is 29 and just about to get married, reads about the house in the newspaper and decides to visit Noah there.

They are meeting again after being separated for 14 years which followed their brief but passionate summer romance. Noah and Allie spend a wonderful summer together, but her family and the socio-economic realities of the time prevents them from being together. They were separated by class, as she was the daughter of a wealthy family, and he worked as a laborer in a lumberyard. Meeting each other after such a long time brings back a flood of memories and emotions. They have dinner together and talk about their lives and the past.

One of my most favorite moment from their past life,

“Noah: "You wanna dance with me?"

Allie: "Sure. Now?"

Noah: "Mmm Hmm"

Allie: "You're not supposed to dance in the street."
Noah: "You are supposed to dance in the street."
Allie: "Yeah, but we don't have any music."
Noah: "Well, we'll make some... Bum bum bum bum bum bum..."
Allie: "You're a terrible singer."
Noah: "I know."
Allie: "And I like this song.”

Allie gets to know that Noah had written letters to her for one year after their breakup that her mother hid so that she could never receive them and would think that Noah had forgotten about her and move on. They talk about the possibilities could have happened and how different would their lives be without her mother's interference. At the end of the night, Noah invites her to visit him the next day and promises her a surprise.

Following day, Noah takes Allie on a canoe ride in a small lake. She is happy and enjoying all her moments with Noah there. On their way back to home, a storm caught them. On returning to his house, they talk again about their love, their passion, how they were young and so much in love with each other and accept that their feelings have still not changed. All alone, soaked by the storm, Noah and Allie share a tender moment and kiss each other and make love.

Allie's mom visits her the next morning and handles her all the letters from Noah. When she leaves, Allie is torn and has to choose between her love Noah and Lon, her today fiancée. Noah asks her to stay but she decides to leave. Crying all the way back to the hotel, she starts reading his letters and meets Lon, who is waiting for her there.

Noah stops reading the story at this point that suggests the audience that he is reading to his wife. All through the story he explains his illness that he is battling a third cancer and suffering from heart disease, kidney failure, and severe arthritis in his hands. He starts reading the story again, describing their life together. He had changed their names in the story to protect her. They had a walk together and Allie, although she does not recognize him, says she might feel something for him. Then they have dinner together. Allie however doesn't remember who she chose in her past but she still tells him that she loves him after recognizing him. They hug each other and talk for a while, but after almost four hours, Allie fades. She begins to panic and hallucinate and forgets who Noah is again. The nurses have to come in and they have to sedate her. Later Noah has a stroke and this prevents him from visiting Allie. After he recovers he pays a visit to Allie late at night as they both live in the same care home and he finds her in bed, asleep. She wakes up and recognizes him and tells him again that she loves him. They kiss and fall asleep next to each other, having faith that their love will take them away together.

The beauty and strength of this novel was how every time, despite of all the circumstances, they always chose each other. In the beginning, the writer has depicted the craziness and boldness of their young love and how they connected just after their first meeting. Followed by their heartbreak, their separation, their pain and aching love, only to make us realize the power of love and how it changes our fate. They reunite after 14 years, this time they are mature, have responsibilities and a completely different life yet after meeting just for once, they again felt the fire of love and their burning emotions. And then in the end, when she has forgotten every being of her life, He kept reading their precious love story to her again and again. With all her forgetfulness, she still managed to fall for this weak old man with Grey hair and wrinkly skin, believing their love will take them away together.

This sowed the very idea of everlasting and endless love that sometimes, only a few times, when you're lucky, or when you're the most luckiest person of this world, you happen to fall in love of this kind. No matter what happen next, if or not you both end up together, it stays the best and the most precious feeling of this universe. And they were the luckiest to not just feel it or live it but to stay and end up together. :')

Below are all my favorite quotes from the novel, read and share!!

  • “In time, the hurt began to fade and it was easier to just let it go. At least I thought it was. But in every boy I met in the next few years, I found myself looking for you, and when the feelings got too strong, I'd write you another letter. But I never sent them for fear of what I might find. By then, you'd gone on with your life and I didn't want to think about you loving someone else. I wanted to remember us like we were that summer. I didn't ever want to lose that.”
  • “We sit silently and watch the world around us. This has taken a lifetime to learn. It seems only the old are able to sit next to one another and not say anything and still feel content. The young, brash and impatient, must always break the silence. It is a waste, for silence is pure. Silence is holy. It draws people together because only those who are comfortable with each other can sit without speaking. This is the great paradox.”
  • “In times of grief and sorrow I will hold you and rock you and take your grief and make it my own. When you cry I cry and when you hurt I hurt. And together we will try to hold back the floods to tears and despair and make it through the potholed street of life”
  • “Every great love starts with a great story...”
  • “She was my dream. She made me who I am, and holding her in my arms was more natural to me than my own heartbeat. I think about her all the time. Even now, when I'm sitting here, I think about her. There could never have been another.”
  • “She wanted something else, something different, something more. Passion and romance, perhaps, or maybe quiet conversations in candlelit rooms, or perhaps something as simple as not being second.”
  • “I am nothing special, of this I am sure. I am a common man with common thoughts and I've led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me, this has always been enough..”
  • “So it's not gonna be easy. It's going to be really hard; we're gonna have to work at this everyday, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, everyday. You and me... everyday.”
  • “You can't live your life for other people. You've got to do what's right for you, even if it hurts some people you love.”
  • “You are, and always have been, my dream.”
  • “You are my best friend as well as my lover, and I do not know which side of you I enjoy the most. I treasure each side, just as I have treasured our life together.”
  • “We fell in love, despite our differences, and once we did, something rare and beautiful was created. For me, love like that has only happened once, and that's why every minute we spent together has been seared in my memory. I'll never forget a single moment of it.”
  • “They didn’t agree on much. In fact, they didn’t agree on anything. They fought all the time and challenged each other ever day. But despite their differences, they had one important thing in common. They were crazy about each other.”
  • “I love you. I am who I am because of you. You are every reason, every hope, and every dream I've ever had, and no matter what happens to us in the future, everyday we are together is the greatest day of my life. I will always be yours. ”
  • “My daddy said, that the first time you fall in love, it changes you forever and no matter how hard you try, that feeling just never goes away.”
  • “You are the answer to every prayer I've offered. You are a song, a dream, a whisper, and I don't know how I could have lived without you for as long as I have.”
  • “If you're a bird... I'm a bird...”
  • “Poets often describe love as an emotion that we can't control, one that overwhelms logic and common sense. That's what it was like for me. I didn't plan on falling in love with you, and I doubt if you planned on falling in love with me. But once we met, it was clear that neither of us could control what was happening to us. We fell in love, despite our differences, and once we did, something rare and beautiful was created. For me, love like that has happened only once, and that's why every minute we spent together has been seared in my memory. I'll never forget a single moment of it.”
  • “My Dearest Allie. I couldn't sleep last night because I know that it's over between us. I'm not bitter anymore, because I know that what we had was real. And if in some distant place in the future we see each other in our new lives, I'll smile at you with joy and remember how we spent the summer beneath the trees, learning from each other and growing in love. The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds, and that's what you've given me. That's what I hope to give to you forever. I love you. I'll be seeing you. Noah”
  • “Dusk is just an illusion because the sun is either above the horizon or below it. And that means that day and night are linked in a way that few things are there cannot be one without the other yet they cannot exist at the same time. How would it feel I remember wondering to be always together yet forever apart?”
  • “A living poem" had always been the words that came to mind when he tried to describe her to others.”
  • “An ordinary beginning, something that would have been forgotten had it been anyone but her. But as he shook her hand and met those striking emerald eyes, he knew before he'd taken his next breath that she was the one he could spend the rest of his life looking for but never find again. She seemed that good, that perfect, while a summer wind blew through the trees.”
  • “She would tell him what she wanted in her life--her hopes and dreams for the future--and he would listen intently and then promise to make it all come true. And the way he said it made her believe him, and she knew how much he meant to her.”
  • “The scariest thing about distance is that you don’t know whether they’ll miss you or forget you.”
  • “Poetry, she thought, wasn't written to be analyzed; it was meant to inspire without reason, to touch without understanding.”
  • “You and I were different. We came from different worlds, and yet you were the one how taught me the value of love. You showed me what it was like to care for another, and I am a better man because of it. I don't want you to ever forget that.”
  • “What are we after all our dreams, after all our memories?”
  • “No, it's not that. It's not what you're thinking. I was serious when I said 'all of it'. I can remember every moment we were together, and in eachof them there was something wonderful. I can't really pick any one time that meant more than any other. The entire summer was perfect, the kind of summer everyone should have. How could I pick one moment over another? Poets often describe love as an emotion that we can't control, one that overwhelms logic and common sense.
  • “And when I came in with tears in my eyes, you always knew whether I needed you to hold me or just let me be. I don't know how you knew, but you did, and you made it easier for me.”
  • “It's the possibility that keeps me going, not the guarantee.”
  • “Sometimes we need to be apart to understand just how much we truly love each other .”
  • “I know, but no matter what I choose I have to live with it. Forever. I have to be able to go forward and not look back anymore. Can you understand that?”
  • “I'll be anything you want, just tell me what you want and I'll be that.”
  • “a person can get used to anything if given enough time”
  • “Would you stop thinking about what everyone wants. Stop thinking about what I want, what he wants, what your parents want. What do you want?”
  • “Silence is pure and holy. It draws people together because only those who are comfortable with each other can sit without speaking.”
  • “Maybe we've lived a thousand lives before this one and in each of them we've found each other... I know I've spent each life before this one searching for you. Not someone like you but you, for your soul and mine must always come together.”
  • “no matter what happens to us in the future, everyday we are together is the greatest day of my life. i will always be yours.”
  • “Who am I? And how I wonder, will this story end? . . . My life? It isn't easy to explain. It has not been the rip-roaring spectacular I fancied it woul be, but neither have I burrowed around with the gophers. i suppose it has most resembled a bluechip stock: fairly stable, more ups and downs, and gradually tending over time. A good buy, a lucky buy, and I've learned that not everyone can say this about his life. But do not be misled. I am nothing special; of this I am sure. I am common man with common thought and I've led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me, and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me, this has always been enough. The romantics would call this a love story, the cynics would call it a tragedy. In my mind, it's a little bit of both, and no matter how you choose to view it in the end, it does not change the fact that involves a great deal of my life and the path I've chosen to follow. I have no complaints about the places it has taken me, enough complaints to fill a circus tent about other thins, maybe, but the path I've chosen has always been the right one, and I wouldn't have had it any other way. Time, unfortunately, doesn't make it easy to stay on course. The path is straight as ever, but now it is strewn with the rocks and gravel that accumulated over a lifetime . . . There is always a moment right before I begin to read the story when my mind churns, and I wonder, will it happen today? I don't know, for I never know beforehand, and deep down it really doesn't matter. It's the possibility that keeps me going, not the guarantee, a sort of wager on my part. And though you may call me a dreamer or a fool or any other thing, I believe that anything is possible. I realize that odds, and science, are against me. But science is not the answer; this I know, this I have learned in my lifetime. And that leaves me with the belief that miracles, no matter how inexplicable or unbelievable, are real and can occur without regard to the natural order of things. So once again, just as I do every day, I begin to read the notebook aloud, so that she can hear it, in the hope that the miracle, that has come to dominate my life will once again prevail. And maybe, just maybe, it will.”
  • “It might seem as the hardest thing to do, but you have to forget the guy who forgot about you.”
  • “I realize the odds, and science, are against me. But science is not the total answer; this I know, this I have learned in my lifetime. And that leaves me with the belief that miracles, no matter how inexplicable or unbelievable, are real and can occur without regard to the natural order of things.”
  • “Our souls were one, if you must know and never shall they be apart; with splendid dawn, your face aglow i reach for you and find my heart”
  • “I been watching you, working day and night, slaving so hard you barely have time to catch your breath. People do that for three reasons. Either they crazy, or stupid, or trying to forget.”
  • “We're not the same people we were then. We've changed, we've grown.”
  • “The reason it hurts so much to separate is because our souls are connected. Maybe they always have been and always will be. Maybe we've lived a thousand lives before this one and in each of them we've found each other. And maybe each time, we've been forced apart for the same reasons. That means that this goodbye is both a goodbye for the past ten thousand years and a prelude to what will come. When I look at you, I see your beauty and grace and know they have grown stronger with every life you have lived. And I know I have spent every life before this on searching for you. Not someone like you, but you, for your soul and mine must always come together. And then, for a reason neither of us understand, we've been forced to say goodbye.  I would love to tell you that everything will work out for us, and I promise to do all I can to make sure it does. But if we never meet again and this is truly goodbye, I know we will see each other again, and maybe the stars will have changed, and we will not only love each other in that time, but for all the times we've had before.”
  • “What was she like?" I tell the truth. "She was my dream. She made me who I am, and holding her in my arms was more natural to me than my own heartbeat. I think about her all the time. Even now, when I'm sitting here, I think about her. There could never be another.”
  • “That's my sweetheart in there. Wherever she is, that's where my home is.”
  • “After dinner, I become afraid despite myself. I know I should be joyous, for this reunion is the proof that love can still be ours, but I know the bell has tolled this evening. The sun has long since set and the thief is about to come, and there is nothing I can do to stop it. So I stare at her and wait and live a lifetime in these last remaining moments.”
  • “The romantics would call this a love story, the cynics would call it a tragedy. In my mind it’s a little bit of both, and no matter how you choose to view it in the end, it does not change the fact that it involves a great deal of my life and the path I’ve chosen to follow.”
  • “Toward the end of their relationship she'd told him once, "I wish I could give you what you're looking for, but I don't know what it is. There's a part of you that you keep closed off from everyone, including me. Its as if I'm not the one you're really with. Your mind is on someone else." He tried to deny it, but she didn't believe him. "I'm a woman - I know these things. When you look at me sometimes, I know you're seeing someone else. Its like you keep waiting for her to pop out of thin air to take you away from all this...”
  • “And I learned what is obvious to a child. That life is simply a collection of little lives, each lived one day at a time. That each day should be spent finding beauty in flowers and poetry and talking to animals. That a day spent with dreaming and sunsets and refreshing breezes cannot be bettered.”
  • “Poets knew that isolation in nature, far from people and things man-made, was good for the soul, and he'd always identified with poets.”
  • “When the lump in his throat subsided, he whispered to her, "You are the answer to every prayer I've offered. You are a song, a dream, a whisper, and I don't know how I could have lived without you for as long as I have. I love you, Allie, more than you can ever imagine. I always have, and I always will.”
  • “But more than that, he admired the way she'd always spoken her mind. He remembered that after they'd gone out a few times, he'd said to her what he said to all women he dated-that he wasn't ready for a steady relationship. Unlike the others, though, Allie had simply nodded and said, "Fine." But on her way out the door, she'd turned and said: "But your problem isn't me, or your job, or your freedom, or whatever else you think it is. Your problem is that you're alone. Your father made the Hammond name famous, and you've probably been compared to him all your life. You've never been your own person. A life like that makes you empty inside, and you're looking for someone who will magically fill that void. But no one can do that but you.”
  • “Would you do something for me? Please? Would you just picture your life for me? Thirty years from now, forty years from now? What's it look like? If it's with that guy, go. Go! I lost you once, I think I could do it again, if I thought it's what you really wanted.”
  • “sometimes our future is dictated by what we are, as opposed to what we want.”
  • “I love you, Allie. I am who I am because of you. You are every reason, every hope, and every dream I've ever had, and no matter what happens to us in the future, every day we are together is the greatest day of my life. I will always be yours. And, my darling, you will always be mine.”
  • “Science only goes so far, then comes God.
  • “i wait. with all my dreams, i know her heart, and i know i'm almost there.”
  • “That a day spent with dreaming and sunsets and refreshing breezes cannot be bettered.”
  • “Poets often describe love as an emotion that we can't control, one that overwhelms logic and common sense. That's what it's like for me. I didn't plan on falling in love with you, and I doubt that you planned on falling in love with me. But once we met, it was clear that neither of us could control what was happening to us. We fell in love, despite our differences, and once we did, something rare and beautiful was created. For me love like that has happened only once, and that's why every minute we spent together has been seared in my memory. I'll never forget a single moment of it.”
  • “I have always been a firm believer in God and the power of prayer, though to be honest, my faith has made for a list of questions I definitely want answered after I'm gone.”
  • “And if, in some distant place in the future, we see each other in our new lives, I will smile at you with joy, and remember how we spent a summer beneath the trees, learning from each other and growing in love.”
  • “But he had been in love once, that he knew. Once and only once, and a long time ago. And it had changed him forever. Perfect love did that to a person and this had been perfect.”
  • “Would you just stay with me? Stay with you? What for? Look at us! We're already fighting! Well that's what we do! We fight! You tell me when I'm being an arrogant son of a bitch and I tell you when you're being a pain in the ass! Which you are, 99% of the time. I'm not afraid to hurt your feelings, you have like a two-second rebound rate and you're back doing the next pain in the ass thing. So, what?
  • “The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds.”
  • “I love you now as I write this, and I love you now as you read this”
  • “America was in full swing now, all the papers said so, and people were rushing forward, leaving behind the horrors of war. She understood the reasons, but they were rushing, like Lon, toward long hours and profits, neglecting the things that brought beauty to the world.”
  • “He looked at her. She was pretty still, with thick hair and soft eyes, and she moved so gracefully that it almost seemed as though she were gliding. He'd seen beautiful women before, though, women who caught his eye, but to his mind, they usually lacked the traits he found most desirable. Traits like intelligence, confidence, strength of spirit, passion, traits that inspired others to greatness, traits he aspired to himself.”
  • “I've learned that we're all entitled to have our secrets.”
  • “Every girl is beautiful. Sometimes it just takes the right guy to see it.”
  • “Nothing is ever lost nor can be lost; the body aged, sluggish,cold.... the embers left from earlier fires shall dully flame again”
  • “It is life, I think, to watch the water. A man can learn so many things.”
  • “I lost you once, I think I can do it again.”
  • “Wandering and confused, lost to myself, ill-assorted, contradictory, Pausing, gazing, bending, and stopping”
  • “Who did she know in Raleigh who took the time off to fix a house? Or read Whitman or Eliot, finding images in the mind, thoughts of the spirit? Or hunted dawn from the bow of a canoe? These weren't the things that drove society, but she felt they shouldn't be treated as unimportant. They made living worthwhile.”
  • “Our lives can't be measured by our final years, of this I am sure.”
